10 TIPS FOR BREAST
CANCER PREVENTION

- Dont eat high-fat animal foods (except
fish).Eating less red meat, pork,
and dairy products (except low fat) is the first vital step in reducing
breast cancer risk.These foods are
high in saturated fat and contain a polyunsaturated fat known as AA
(arachidonic acid) that can increase your risk for breast cancer.
- Stay lean.It is a fact that women who are overweight after menopause have a
three times greater incidence of breast cancer than women who are at their
ideal weight.
- Perform a minimum of 30 minutes of endurance
exercise, five times per week.Numerous studies indicate that active women have a lower incidence
of breast cancer.
- Take a high-potency multiple vitamin containing
vitamin E succinate and vitamin D.According to investigative studies, vitamin E succinate has important
anti-cancer properties.Other
studies indicate that women with vitamin D blood levels above 85 nmol/L
have a lower risk of developing breast cancer.
- Drink less alcohol. The Nurses Health Study and other
research shows that women who consume more than one alcoholic drink each
day may double their risk of breast cancer and colon cancer. The National Cancer Institute states
that alcohol consumption is the second most significant environmental
cause of cancer, after cigarette smoking.
- Take supplements to get omega-3 fats.Studies have shown that women with
higher levels of omega-3 fat in their breast cells have less risk of
developing breast cancer, compared to women with lower breast levels of
the omega-3 fats.Supplements with
omega-3 fats include fish oil, flaxseed oil, and borage seed oil.Eating fish twice a week will also boost
your bodys omega-3 levels.
- Get a daily dose of cruciferous vegetables.Research demonstrates that consuming
cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower,
bok choy) on a regular basis can prevent breast cancer in women. These vegetables contain a unique
molecule called the indole-3 carbinol, which helps the body detoxify
cancer-causing agents.
- Consider supplements with curcumin and other natural
anti-inflammatory agents.About 25%
of breast cancer cases are caused by genetic reasons.Scientists have found that the natural
agent called curcumin may silence the genetic factors that can cause
breast cancer to develop in some women.Ask your doctor for more information.
- Take two heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseed
each day.Studies have demonstrated
that 50 gm of ground flaxseed per day can reverse cell activity associated
with breast cancer development and progression.Sprinkle it onto cereal, or mix into lowfat
yogurt, juice, or a protein shake.
- Eat at
least one serving of soy food each day.Breast cancer rates are 75% lower in countries where soy foods are
a main staple of the daily diet.Soy exhibits a number of anti-cancer properties, but there is some
controversy about soy and breast cancer.A recent study showed that giving breast cancer patients 200 mg per
day of soy supplements helped shrink the tumors while patients were
awaiting surgery.
Its important to speak with your doctors about these
strategies.Seek the guidance of a
health care professional before exercising, dieting, and using supplements.
Condition of the Month: Losing Sleep
Getting enough sleep is a
critical part of maintaining good health. Here are three
tips to help you fall
asleep and stay asleep soundly:
1)Stick to a Routine: Conditioning your body to sleep
at a certain time and for a certain length of time increases your chances of
waking up feeling refreshed.Giving your
body routine hints that bedtime is coming is also helpful; take a warm bath,
read a book, or listen to soft music.
2)Balance Light & Dark: Sunlight helps regulate
your bodys sleep cycle and stimulates the production of melatonin, a hormone
that regulates the sleep cycle. On the
other hand, when youre getting ready for sleep, limit light sources by pulling
the shades, turning off the lights, and closing doors.
3)Dont Drink, Dont Smoke: When it comes to sleep,
drinking alcohol and smoking have profound consequences.Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but after
its metabolized it wont keep you asleep. In fact, once the body processes the sugar found in alcohol, it can wake
you up.And nicotine in cigarettes is a
stimulant- perfect for keeping you awake all night long.
